Rhodes completed a 4 game sweep of SCAC foe Centre College on Sunday, taking both ends of the double header by scores of 6-5 and 9-1. Jennifer Whatley singled with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th of game one to give the Lynx the win, with Sara Bowen picking up the win in relief. Chelsea Peters notched the win in the circle in game 2, improving her record to 3-0 on the season.
Rhodes got on the board early in game 1, when Caroline Cooper walked in the first, and came around to score on a double from Bowen, giving the Lynx an early 1-0 lead. Centre countered with 3 runs in the 3rd, on 4 singles and aggressive baserunning, to take their first lead of the weekend at 3-1.
Rhodes quickly answered in the bottom of the 3rd, with a 2 out, bases loaded triple from Elise Suna to score 3 runs and give the Lynx a 4-3 lead. Centre plated a run in the 4th to tie the game at 4 heading into the top of the 5th,
Charlotte Jones tripled for the Colonels to lead off the 5th, and scored on a single from Cailynn West, giving the Colonels a 5-4 lead. WIth a runner on and no outs, Sara Bowen came in relief of starter Cindy Bitters. Bowen retired 9 of the 10 hitters she faced in the next 3 innings, allowing just one runner to reach base on an error, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th, Rebekah Moore led off the inning with a double to left field, then Bowen singled to score pinch runner Ashlyn Chandler and tie the game at 5. Elise Suna reached base on an error, giving the Lynx runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by Armanda Venezia, Jennifer Whatley lined a 1-1 pitch to right to score pinch runner Cassi-Bails McLeod and give the Lynx the 6-5 win.
Bowen was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI in the game, while Suna was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI to lead the Lynx offense.
The Lynx bats stayed hot in game 2, giving freshman Chelsea Peters more than enough run support as she made the first SCAC start of her career. Kelli Zomer set the tone for the game, leading off the game with her 3rd home run of the year, and Conn would single and score on a double by Moore to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Rhodes added 4 more in the second, with 3 walks, a bunt single by Zomer, followed by 2 RBI double by Moore, giving the Lynx a 6-0 lead after 2 innings of play. Moore would lead off the bottom of the 4th with a single, and advanced to third when Bowen reached on an error. Ashlyn Chandler singled to score Moore, then singles by Whatley and Karli Alvino would give the Lynx a 9-0 lead heading into the 5th.
Centre scored their lone run of the game on a 2 out double from Caitlyn Teague in the 5th, but Peters got Regina Sena to ground out to short to end the game after 5 innings with the Lynx winning 9-1 to complete the 4 game sweep.
Peters improved her record to 3-0 on the season, giving up 1 run on 4 hits while notching 5 strikeouts. Moore was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI and Zomer was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 runs scored to lead the Lynx offense.
Rhodes is 15-3 on the season, and 4-0 in the SCAC. The Lynx will try to extend their 12-game winning streak on Wednesday when they take on LeMoyne Owen College, then hit the road for a 4 game SCAC series against Sewanee this weekend.
